Vestas Turbine Catches Fire At 27 MW Wind Farm In Brazil
Vestas has confirmed that the nacelle of a V112-3.0 MW turbine caught fire at the 27 MW Xangri-la site, in the southern Brazilian Rio Grande do Sul state, on Saturday, Oct. 15.
According to a spokesperson for the manufacturer, no injuries or other material damage occurred as a result of the fire.
“Vestas is conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire,” says the spokesperson. “We have already begun examining data from the turbine, and a team of experts will soon arrive in Brazil to support the investigation.”
As previously reported, Honda Automoveis do Brasil Ltda. (HAB), Honda’s Brazil-based automobile production and sales subsidiary, built the wind farm in the city of Xangri-la, approximately 1,000 kilometers south of HAB’s production plant in Sumare, Sao Paulo.
The company invested approximately $40 million in the wind farm, which features nine 3 MW turbines, to generate approximately 95 GWh of clean electricity per year for the Sumare automobile plant.
