Vestas Signs Order For 120 MW Khalladi Wind Park In Morocco

Vestas Wind Systems confirmed this week that it had signed a firm and unconditional order to supply wind turbines to the 120 MW Khalladi wind park being developed in northern Morocco.

The announcement was originally rumored late 2015, but only confirmed this week, when Danish wind energy giant Vestas Wind Systems announced that it had signed a firm and unconditional order with ACWA Power for 40 wind turbines. Vestas will supply 40 of its V90-3.0 MW wind turbines to the 120 MW Khalladi wind park, which is set to be developed in the Tangiers region of northern Morocco.

ACWA Power is a privately held developer, investor, and power operator with presence throughout the Middle East and North Africa, Southern Africa, and South East Asia.

Conversely, Vestas has more than 900 MW already installed or currently under construction throughout Africa.

The Khalladi wind park is set to be the first renewable energy project financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Morocco, which will allow private producers to sell electricity through power purchase agreements to industrial off-takers. Vestas will deliver the turbines in the second quarter of 2017, with completion of the project expected to take place before the year is out.

“Being Vestas’ first order in Morocco since 2000, this project represents a big step forward for us, as we continue to work hard to build a stronger presence in the country and contribute to the development of the growing Moroccan wind industry,” said Marco Graziano, President of Vestas Mediterranean.
