The Timken Co. will donate $100,000 to Red Cross relief efforts aiding victims of the massive earthquake that rocked South Central China on Monday.
Less than a month ago, the company opened an aerospace and precision products facility in Chengdu, its fifth manufacturing plant in China. No Timken employees were injured in the quake.
"As a company, as the Timken family, our hearts go out to those in the region who have suffered, who have lost family," Timken spokesman Jeff Dafler said. He said the company also is encouraging employees to make donations to the relief effort.
Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, is only about 70 miles from the epicenter of the temblor that shook buildings thousands of miles away.
Dafler said he called his counterpart in China when he heard about the quake, and has continued to monitor the situation. The new plant was in operation with about 120 employees when the quake hit, he said.
