Timken Canada LP, Mississauga, ON, has cut production to one shift at its tapered roller bearing plant in St. Thomas, ON, and laid off 140 workers -- about 65% of the current workforce -- on March 30, 2009.
About 70 other workers had been laid off from the plant last year. Before that, employment at the plant was close to 300.
A spokesperson at Timken's head office in Canton, OH, said the layoffs are due to the current downturn in manufacturing, and the jobs would return when the economy improves. She said the downturn is affecting the company's facilities all over the world.
