Timken Brings Innovation to Housed Units
The Timken Company (NYSE:TKR) today announced two new innovations to its Timken(R) Fafnir(R) ball-bearing housed-unit line - a larger, more durable housing and a new set-screw locking system.
Developed for a wide range of applications and environments, the new pillow block housing is available with either a set-screw or eccentric-collar locking system. The second new product is Shaft Guarding technology (TM), a premium set-screw locking system. Both products are now available.
"Through our expertise in friction management, we have taken one of Timken's core products and fundamentally enhanced it to improve our customers' system performance in many applications," said Daniel E. Muller, president - Distribution and Services. "Industrial customers in markets from agriculture to material aggregate depend on Timken for innovations like our new pillow block housing and Shaft Guarding technology to help them reduce maintenance costs and improve uptime."
The new pillow block housing provides better seating strength since it is wider along the shaft axis and 30 percent heavier on average than a standard housing. Finite element analysis shows this new housing is up to three times more durable than previous versions in both the upright and upside-down mounting positions. The unit's solid, flat feet provide increased strength and no stress points in the recessed corners, virtually eliminating deformation of the mounting surface and preventing accumulation of ambient material under the feet. The unit is powder-coated in a black epoxy finish for additional corrosion protection. The new housed units have easy access to mounting bolts, using the same mounting hardware as the previous block design.
For premium housed units where set-screw locking is desired, Timken has introduced new Shaft Guarding technology.
Where traditional products rely on the set screws to dig into the shaft to maintain grip, Timken's new technology transfers the pressure of the set screws through a stainless steel, hardened band. This helps eliminate the problems encountered from relative motion typically associated with set-screw products - nicks, raised metal or permanent shaft damage. The stainless steel band exceeds all current gripping application requirements, maintains dimensional integrity and reduces fretting corrosion.
