Commercial banks play an important role in financing export and import transactions. Import transactions are more straightforward for banks. You can tap your line of credit to purchase the inventory. Export transactions are more complex for both the small enterprise and the bank, big or small. So in order to successfully export, you need to know the best way to work with banks.
From many banks' perspective, exports carry a higher risk than imports or transactions within the country. The level of risk depends on where the exports are good and the customer’s credit worthiness, and both can be measured without too much effort.
Certainly there has been an improvement over the last 10 years and some new entrants into the market. For example, UPS, the global logistics giant, has a banking arm--UPS Capital. Because UPS knows about shipping and international markets, not to mention the businesses their customers are in, a large ratio of its lending goes to support the borrowing needs of exporters and importers. In fact, UPS Capital is the number one participant in SBA's and the Export-Import Bank of the U.S. export loan guarantee programs where the commercial lender generally take a 10 percent stake in the value of each loan and Uncle Sam takes the other 90 percent.
The Ex-Im Bank is always looking for new commercial banks to participate in the program and several times a year offers training sessions on its offerings. Congress has increased funding for small business export financing but the amount of money available continues to exceed demand. Banks provide about 39 percent of all small business financing evenly divided between local and international banks.
So if you need financing for inventory or production expansion, or have been in business for at least a year and have sales and some collateral, or want to offer terms to your international customer, contact your local bank and ask if they partner with government export programs. If the answer is no, tell them that this opportunity exists.
If they still show no interest, look at the Ex-Im Bank website to see the list of current partners and whether any are near or otherwise appeal to you. And next time that parcel arrives from Amazon via UPS, recall that there is an export finance program connected to that brown uniform.
