Eyes On Freight (EOF) acts as a matchmaker between SMEs who need to get goods across borders and vendors who offer a wide range of services: shipping, legal, compliance, customs, payment, security, and virtually any other kind of service that might be required when getting your shipment from here to there.
Chris Nyenhuis, EOF’s director of Business Development, points to a small South African shoe manufacturer he’s working with currently, who’s exporting for the first time. She can’t learn all the procedures and regulations without taking time away from running her business. So, EOF is matching her to the various vendors who will help her to get her product overseas through customs, with tariffs paid. But EOF is also advising her on how to keep costs down, as well as helping her review her warehousing and distribution options once her product crosses borders. With that done, she can concentrate on the parts of her business she knows.
“You tell us what you're doing, we go find you all the pieces to that puzzle,” says Nyenhuis. “We'll pretty much build your supply chain for you from the beginning to the end.”
Nyenhuis says his company looks for niche vendors in the markets it serves rather than larger multinationals. And EOF vets those vendors before recommending their services. “We believe the local companies in that city or that country obviously know the environment best, know the culture best, so we build strong relationships with those companies,” he says. “You're not just going to be another number to them.”
He stresses though that EOF is not a broker; it’s a matchmaker. “We don't negotiate rates. We don't handle the freight. We don't own the freight. We simply match people. And from everything that we've heard, as far as we know, we are the only one that's done it this way.”
For any small business owner exporting into a foreign market, says Nyenhuis, “The biggest concern always is, ‘If I send my product, am I going to get paid?’ And vice-versa, ‘If I pay, am I going to get my product?’”
To remove that uncertainty from the transaction, “We partnered with escrow.com,” he says. That means that every transaction becomes an escrow transaction, with buyer and seller protected. “If the product arrives, the money's released, so there are no unpleasant surprises.”
EOF operates primarily in Europe, South Africa, Australia, and the US, with plans to expand in 2015 into Latin America.
