Taiwan, via the official Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry, reported machinery and equipment production, export, and import data for 2005.
In total, Taiwan exported USD $13.1 billion of industrial machinery and equipment. This was up more than 6% over 2004.
The largest export markets for Taiwan's machine and parts industry were Hong Kong and mainland China, combining for almost 35% by value. The United States was the second-largest export market for Taiwan, absorbing $2.2 billion, or 17% of machine and parts exports. Japan, Thailand and Vietnam round out the top five.
On the import side, Taiwan brought in $17.8 billion of machinery and equipment in 2005, down almost 2% from 2004. Machine tools were particularly soft, down almost 24% year-on-year. The vast majority of those imports came from Japan, followed by the United States, Germany and Hong Kong / mainland China.
Bearing exports by Taiwan are lumped in with the category of Bearing, Gears and Ball Screws. The category grew more than 14%, accounting for exports worth $436 million in 2004 and $498 million in 2005.
