SKF to Showcase MCA Handheld Device (Pic)

SKF will display its Machine Condition Advisor (MCA) handheld device at this year's Maintec industrial maintenance and asset management exhibition on 17-19 March at the NEC in Birmingham.

The MCA is claimed to be an easy-to-use, ergonomically designed, handheld device, designed to simplify machine maintenance and prevent costly failures.

Putting the benefits of machine monitoring within reach of any maintenance and operations personnel, the MCA simultaneously measures vibration signals and temperature to quickly and accurately assess the condition of essential rotating equipment, such as pumps, fans, motors, compressors, cranes and conveyors.

Although it is small enough to fit in the pocket or clip to a work belt, the MCA features powerful signal processing and advanced technology, making the device suitable for novice and expert users alike.

Users simply turn the unit on, then press the sensor tip against the part of the machine (usually the bearing) to be measured.

Once the readings - displayed on an integral bright backlit LCD - stabilise, the user presses a button to 'hold' the values, which can then be read and recorded.

The MCA measures velocity vibration signals from the machine and automatically compares them to pre-programmed ISO guidelines, while at the same time applying the SKF Enveloped Acceleration technique to compare readings with established bearing vibration guidelines.

If measurements exceed these guidelines, the unit's display shows an 'Alert' or 'Danger' alarm to indicate potential bearing damage.

Simultaneous with the vibration measurement, the MCA's infrared temperature sensor also checks bearing temperatures for abnormal heat loads that could indicate lubrication problems.

Powered by an environmentally friendly rechargeable lithium-ion battery, the MCA measures vibration signals from 10Hz to 1,000Hz and temperatures from -20C to +200C.

Displays can be switched between metric or English units and the rugged device is rated IP 54 for use in harsh operating environments.

An optional external vibration sensor fitted with a magnet is also available for use in tight spaces or on hard-to-reach surfaces.
