SKF's SONL Housings and Lubrication for Smoother Conveying at Leading Mine

(October 19, 2011)

Industrial gear technology and mechanical power transmission specialist, Hansen Transmissions South Africa, (local subsidiary of the Belgium based Hansen Industrial Transmissions) enlisted SKF South Africa's engineering expertise and product excellence to supply effective lubrication systems for overland conveyors at one of South Africa's leading coal mines.

SKF Application Engineering Manager, Darren Chetty, explains, "When Hansen Transmissions' Senior Engineer, Willem Sullivan, contacted me for technical information on oil housings and the best lubrication system for bearing housings in overland conveyors at this major project, a meeting was arranged to discuss the most effective and practical solution. Willem agreed to go with my recommendation of SKF SONL oil housings as the most appropriate system to meet all application demands and I supplied the technical advice and information as well as a full component list detailing each bearing, adapter sleeve, seal and locating ring for each housing. Willem subsequently contacted me to request certain modifications i.e. fitting vibration sensors radially and axially positioned on the housings. So, in effect, what started as a technical enquiry seeking advice about lubrication, what oil and grease to use and what components would fit best, became a fully fledged project for this global key customer."

Chetty continues: "We determined the position of radial and axial holes for the vibration switches, the location of the switches on the housings as well as specifications as to the depth for the vibration sensors. Willem requested a quotation for all the components i.e. modified housings and associated components including bearings and seals; we also determined what oil viscosity should be used for the project and presented Hansen Transmission with a detailed quotation: 18 off modified housings and associated components, including bearings and seals, as well as an estimated delivery time".

"We pulled out all the stops for Hansen Transmissions because we understood their specific requirements, the pressures, the time frames and the deadlines they had to commit to as well as the serious repercussions of late deliveries for this important project".

The SKF team put in every effort and managed to deliver the entire components order to the project a full month in before the original estimated time. With the delivery complete, Hansen Transmissions requested the SKF Mechanical Field Services team to assemble and install all eighteen bearing and housing assemblies on site.

"As a knowledge engineering company, we are determined to deliver more than just a product - we add value for our customers and present complete solutions based on SKF's core competencies- bearings and units, seals, power transmission, mechatronics, lubrication and services. From a request for technical information, the Hansen Transmissions enquiry progressed to a complete project, involving the services of SKFs' Application engineering, Project engineering and SKF Field Services. SKF proved capable of meeting every customer expectation and supplied technical information, components, modifications, lubrication and transferring of skills to assist the customer throughout the entire process on site. Hansen Transmissions commended SKF for exceptional commitment to excellence in all spheres and they are more than satisfied with SKF's technical abilities, engineering skills, attention to detail, meeting deadlines and phenomenal service," concludes Chettey.
