SKF Investing $73 Million in Puebla

SKF de Mexico (a division of SKF AB, Sweden) said it will receive additional investments totaling at least USD $73 million this year for its fast-expanding operations in Puebla, Mexico.

The focus will be to increase output and cost-effectiveness of bearings headed to automotive and industrial markets, both OEM and service/aftermarket.

SKF's move also means that additional manufacturing resources will be shifted to Puebla. Recently, lines were relocated to Puebla from plants in the United States and from Germany.

SKF de Mexico, founded in 1920, started manufacturing bearings under the SKF brand at Puebla in 1988. The 450,000 square foot plant employs over 500 workers producing large spherical roller bearings, ball bearings, mounted bearings and wheel bearing hub units. SKF also maintains other operations in Puebla, such as a spindle service center.

The first wheel hub bearing production came to Puebla in 2006 when SKF shut down the plant in Aiken, South Carolina.

The Glasgow, Kentucky hub bearing plant is also being closed and production moving to Puebla.

SKF said it will need to hire at least 300 workers at Puebla this year.
