SKF Bearing Handling Tool
SKF AB (Sweden), the world's largest bearing manufacturer, has introduced its new Bearing Handling Tool.
Medium and large size bearings are not only high-precision components, they are in many ways more easily damaged by improper handling than smaller bearings. And the potential expenses, both in bearing and equipment damage, from improper handling go up quickly as the bearings get larger.
Anyone who works with large bearings quickly becomes aware they can be dangerous to handle once the pallet is removed -- not only from the unwieldy size and weight, but also due to the intense heat often used in the installation of large bearings. Ask someone who has used a Towmotor and fabric strap around the OD to install a huge, searing hot bearing, and they'll tell you there must be a better way.
SKF notes, "The biggest problem in handling medium and large size bearings is the safe movement of the bearing from its packaging to the shaft. Another problem is lifting the bearing from a horizontal position, in which most bearings are delivered, and turning it to a vertical position for placement on the shaft."
With its new Bearing Handling Tool, SKF aims to address the safety and handling concerns.
The Bearing Handling Tool (BHT) is a steel band with two handles and two anti-rotation plates. The steel band and handles are fitted around the bearing while it is still resting horizontally out of its packaging. Turning the handles tightens the BHT band around the outer race. Then, the anti-rotation plates are put in place, holding both the inner race and the rolling elements stationary. The entire assembly can then be lifted, by hand using the two handles or by a crane using a strap attached to the handles, to vertical and then onto the shaft.
If the bearing needs to be heated for installation, the BHT can be installed prior to using an induction heater. The BHT is designed to withstand regular use at temperatures up to 320 degrees Fahrenheit (160C).
The Bearing Handling tool comes in two sizes: one for 300-500mm, and another for 500-700mm OD. Both are rated to 1100 lbs. (500 kg).
