Swedish multinational group and internationally leading knowledge engineering company, SKF, provides optimal solutions for mechanical asset life through six different core technologies. From their lubrication solutions family, the SKF e-pump is an electrically driven barrel pumping unit. This unit specifically developed for applications where larger pumping capacity is required, fits directly onto specific standard size drums.
"The unit was specifically developed to address the need for a centralised unit that will perform optimally in remote areas where electrical supply is more readily available than compressed air. It is specifically designed to address the design needs of mining applications or other heavy industrial applications where particularly taxing working environments results in larger volumes of grease usage", explains SKF Manager - Lubrication Solutions, Sarel Froneman.
Designed to fill the gap between the compact SKF Multilube electric pumping unit and the plant-wide Maxilube pneumatic pumping unit, the e-Pump is equipped with an internal pressure relief valve, heating of pumping elements, internal temperature measurement and pressure control. The electrical barrel pumping unit creates up to 250 bar pressure and 55 g/min lubricant output. Lubricant, from oil to NLGI-2 grades grease, can be pumped and barrel accessories are available for 18, 50 and 180 kg barrels. Pumping elements with heating capability as well as internal temperature measurement offer a wide temperature range over which NLGI 00 to NLGI 2 greases could be pumped, depending on configuration.
As a 24V DC standalone unit, the SKF electrical pump unit is able to serve a total loss single line (progressive or parallel) lubrication system.
When the electrical barrel pump is operated in conjunction with a 220V AC SKF control centre from the Muurame family and electrical valve assemblies, the pump can serve single channel or multi channel (up to 14 channels), single line parallel or progressive and dual line systems.
"All equipment and machinery contain moving parts that demand effective and correct lubrication", says Froneman. "We draw on over a century of technical expertise and experience in the development and manufacture of class leading rotating equipment and related products. We interact with customers to discover their precise requirements and expectations. All these elements are combined in the design, development and testing of lubrication systems and philosophies of re-lubrication that will perform with optimal efficiency in even the harshest of operating environments. Our comprehensive product and service package, based on six core technologies - Bearings and Units, Seals, Mechatronics, Power Transmission, Services and Lubrication Systems, enables us to live up to the promise of presenting the total solution for an application. Our customers know that they buy more than a component from SKF - they buy the complete and comprehensive SKF solution", concludes Froneman.
