The number one reason to consider exhibiting at a trade show is because that's where the buyers are. Big vertical and horizontal shows attract buyers from around the world. And they are qualified as evidenced by their ability to fund their way to the show whether in Madrid or Mumbai. Here's an interesting video about the Arab Health show in Dubai. As one of the U.S. exhibitors exclaims: "It's flat out huge!"
The second reason to attend such shows is because they are where the money is. Qualified and numerous buyers have lots of money to spend. For example, last year’s Arab Health show generated estimated sales of $360 million for U.S. exhibitors. Buyers will often fill their catalogs with purchases made at the show, and sellers report filling order books for an entire year.
Third, international shows provide a magnifying glass to look at the competition in your industry, not only with your own country but worldwide. See how you stack up on price, quality, design and functionality. You can talk to prospective buyers on what their looking for in their markets. Shows are great places to do valuable primary market research, where informants can be interviewed over cocktails and you can discreetly eavesdrop on the buzz around the show floor.
Fourth, in the booth next to yours or on the other side of the exhibit hall, you may find another company that wants to partner. Maybe they have a technology that will enhance what your product does. Maybe you have one that will help them. Being in proximity for a week and socializing at abundant happy hours is far more effective than text messages or Skype. Sometimes there's just no substitute for face-to-face contact as the world's airlines frequently remind us.
Fifth, shows have gotten very good at policing intellectual property. German shows in particular are obsessive on the topic, and real police officers and even prosecutors are on premises to deal with anyone dumb enough to steal intellectual property and to try selling a knockoff at a show.
Sixth, many shows around the world are settings where governments provide support to their exporters. The U.S. Commerce Department matches buyers and sellers on the show floor, both at international venues and in the U.S., a popular locale for global shows. In total, the government supports some 150 shows each year. Somewhere, there must be a show for you.
