Shipping Up to Boston - an Intern´s Perspective

Kyra Luck, a rising junior at Boston College majoring in International Studies, joined the WPG team this summer. The following’s a reflection on her internship experience. If you’re interested in applying to be a WPG Intern, please call (617) 385-5060.

How has your experience been at WPG?

Really wonderful. The Boston team was extremely welcoming, and I instantly felt like an important part of the WPG team. Overall, this was an extremely rewarding experience.

I was drawn into this company on my first day. Jim Krzywicki, WPG’s COO, told anecdotes of two SMEs (Mr. Crumb, an Irish stuffing producer, and Rant & Rave, an Irish clothing manufacturer) using WPG’s platform to expand into new markets. It was evident Jim took pride in their success, and that’s when I knew I was working for an amazing company. As a small business owner, I’ve experienced the grueling process of expanding a company overseas, and I know having the right connections and resources is quintessential to successfully navigating the global trade network.

What were your expectations when you arrived? Did your experience match your expectations?

I was very excited coming into this that I would get to see a new dimension of international trade, and my experience has not disappointed me.

How did you find working in Boston?

I absolutely loved it. Boston is my home; I go to school in BC, my family lives in the Seaport, and I naturally gravitate to taking in a job in Boston after graduation - so working here this summer was absolutely amazing.

What do you find expensive?

Going out to eat, but that’s expected living in a major city.

How did you find company culture?

It was very accepting, and I loved how WPG urges all employees to always voice their opinions. This company really puts a lot of trust in their interns. From being taken to networking events, to assisting companies find leads, I consistently felt my efforts were creating tangible results.

What did you find the most interesting about working in Boston?

I just turned 20, and I’m amazed by how many young professionals there are in Boston. If I remember this statistic correctly, Boston’s average age during the academic year drops to 26. This creates an intoxicatingly vibrant environment that I definitely take for granted.

What suggestions do you have for new interns?

Be organized. Recognize which projects to prioritize. Keep an open channel of communication with your supervisors. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication; strive to be concise. See tasks to their completion. Don’t be afraid to seek guidance and clarification, but try to figure things out on your own. Recognize assignment goals. Criticize and accept others criticism of your work. Don’t get overwhelmed; know when to briefly step away from an assignment.

How should interns prepare for the experience?

Be very open minded, read the news, and come to work with a smile.

Is there anything you would do differently?

I definitely accomplished a lot by routinely multitasking, but I would have liked to fully dedicate myself to one project at a time. This was definitely not realistic as some tasks required immediate attentions, but I like completing a project before moving on to the next.

Any other comments?

Thanks for an incredible summer. I learned so much and am extremely grateful for all of the people in this office.
