Schaeffler Opens R&D Center in Shanghai
Schaeffler Holding (Germany), parent of INA and FAG Bearings and LuK clutches, announced it has officially opened a new Research and Development center in Shanghai, China.
With China fast becoming a must-have key market position, Schaeffler is moving rapidly to compete via more local attention, content, manufacturing, and by adding locally-focused R&D.
Approximately 100 engineers staff the Shanghai center, initially focused primarily on bringing higher levels of sophistication and quality to Asian market product programs. The company said it expects, eventually, China's R&D staff could top 250.
Beyond beyond close to local markets, the Shanghai center will be responsible for leveraging R&D expertise from all worldwide centers, helping Schaeffler bear down on the difficult Asian marketscape. In addition, the center is staffed for a high level of customer attention, which ties to its parallel responsibility of identifying new Asia-specific market opportunities.
Although Asian markets now account for approximately 12% of Schaeffler's sales, that is expected to at least double in the next five years, particularly as China continues its global trade expansion.
Taicang, China is already home to a major INA/FAG/LuK plant; expanded several times, it remains one of Schaeffler's largest facilities and is its fastest growing. There is also a regional R&D center in Taicang.
