System solutions for bicycles from Schaeffler
Schaeffler has decades of experience in the development and manufacturing of bicycle bearings. The origins of rolling bearing manufacturing on an industrial scale were closely linked with the invention of the bicycle and its popularity as an individual means of mass transport from the end of the 19th century. FAG's core products were always bottom brackets, which were offered as complete kits. The compact bottom bracket units that were developed for the first time under the designations L66 and Nadax were supplied ready-to-fit and became legendary in the 1970's. Schaeffler now supplies a large number of precision components under the FAG and INA brands. In addition to bottom brackets, these components include hub bearings, headset bearings and bearings and seals for gear hubs. The product range also includes special bearings for racing bicycles, e.g. Cronitect® hybrid bearings, which are equipped with ceramic rolling elements. These offer maximum smooth running and minimum weight as well as a minimum requirement for oil lubrication.
Schaeffler recently brought intelligent sensor bottom brackets onto the market, which provide a positive riding feel on e-bikes and assist the rider according to requirements. Ready-to-fit torque sensor bottom brackets from the FAG brand have a high load capacity and are simple to fit. The bearing unit detects the rider's requirement for motor assistance depending on the situation and controls the output accordingly. Besides the direction of rotation and speed, measurement of the exact torque produced by the rider during pedaling is a prerequisite for precisely determining the additional power requirement. The additional drive power provided by the electric motor is controlled principally by the torque sensor system in the bottom bracket. The rider no longer needs to provide additional
