Schaeffler Group (Germany, parent of INA and FAG bearings) has broken ground on a new bearing manufacturing facility in Yinchuan, northwest China.
Scheduled to come online sometime in late 2009, the new plant will produce large-size bearings -- tapered, spherical cylindrical and ball bearings. It is reportedly budgeted at more than USD $114 million.
Virtually every bearing manufacturer worldwide is planning or has already started work on new production capacity for large-size bearings. Demand for large precision bearings has outstripped supply, driven by the fast-growing wind energy market, along with higher levels of activity in oil and gas drilling, mining, and iron and steel production.
The new facility adds to Schaeffler's presence in Yinchuan, which already hosts FAG Railway Bearing, manufacturing TAROL rail bearings for the growing Asian market. FAG Railway currently employs more than 500 people in facilities covering 140,000 square feet, including a separately-housed rail bearing overhaul and remanufacturing operation. FAG Railway is ISO, TUV and AAR certified.
Adding these new industrial bearing facilities, Schaeffler's manufacturing floorspace in Yinchuan will eventually total cover more than 670,000 square feet.
Groundbreaking was attended by Maria Elisabeth Schaeffler; Wang Rugui, the mayor of Yinchuan; along with various local political figures and dignitaries.
