Once registered, many of the functions of the UK Trade Tariff can be tailored to specific user requirements by using the personalisation functions.
Bookmarks
Bookmarks are useful when you need to switch between multiple pages in the UK Trade Tariff in order to reach a classification decision and allow you to jump from one page to another. You can compare headings and decide what best describes your goods. Similar to using "Favourites" in a web browser, the bookmarks you save are stored in your profile and are displayed as a list of pages in the Tariff. For example, you may need to consider two or three different Tariff headings at the same time before identifying the correct classification.
The bookmark facility can be accessed at any point on your journey through the Tariff - available on this website via links on this and other pages of this guide. Once items have been added to bookmarks you can access them by clicking the view bookmark link.
Once you have created bookmarks, you can register for email alerts to notify you automatically whenever changes take place to Tariff chapters, headings and commodity codes you have bookmarked. See the page in this guide on tariff updates and email alerts.
Bookmarks are also a useful facility for accessing your notes. Any notes related to a bookmarked item can be opened up from within the bookmark page.
Anyone can use the UK Trade Tariff, but to use bookmarks and receive email alerts you need to register with My Business.
"Your Notes"
The "Your Notes" facility allows you to add, edit or remove personal notes to chapters, headings or commodities in the Tariff. The notes are saved in your user profile and can be viewed from the relevant chapter, heading or commodity pages within the UK Trade Tariff. User notes are personal to you and not visible to other Tariff users.
You may wish to add notes for a number of reasons. For example, you may want to use notes to write your own more intuitive description of your goods instead of relying on the description from a commodity code. Notes can also be used to make reference to your catalogue numbers or simply to place reminders to yourself throughout the UK Trade Tariff journey.
Each note can take up to 8,000 characters. Notes can be accessed by clicking on the "Your Notes" icon displayed next to the commodity code in the Tariff schedule. You can also access notes though the bookmark facility.
Find out about the ways you can look for goods and find commodity codes in the pages in this guide on exploring to find a commodity code, looking up a commodity code and searching for a commodity code.
You can also find out about how to get help classifying goods and getting commodity codes in our guides on classification of goods, classification rules and the Tariff and introduction to the Tariff.
Printing and downloading
In any commodity, chapter or heading within the UK Trade Tariff you will be able to print pages. You can also download information as PDF files. To use the printing and downloading facility simply click on the print icon which appears on the right-hand side of the page.
