NTN Develops Electro-conductive Hybrid Bearphite EC
The NTN Corporation (hereafter, NTN) has been mass-producing its "Hybrid Bearphite" high-precision, low-friction sliding bearing with unique hybrid structure of sintered metal and plastic since March 2005. Recently, however, NTN has developed a new product called "Hybrid Bearphite EC"(Note 1) with electro-conductive properties that eliminate electrostatic charges.
The "Hybrid Bearphite" high-precision, low-friction sliding bearing was designed as a substitute for rolling bearings. This unique bearing is formed with a thin plastic sliding material on the inner diameter of the sintered metal. This design gives the required precision (roundness and circularity of 10 microns or less) by means of a custom filler material in the plastic and it delivers a low rotational torque. These features make it ideal for toner image developer units and conveyor rollers in printers as well as photosensitive drum units where it was impossible to use sliding rolling bearings up until now.
However, now there is a demand for electrically conductive bearings for use in some models and by certain users in the market. The plastic layer in the conventional "Hybrid Bearphite" is an insulating material that does not conduct electricity and cannot fill this market need. NTN, therefore, developed the electrically conductive "Hybrid Bearphite EC" by mixing carbon nanoparticles into the plastic material.
(Notes1) EC = electrical conductivity
