There are all sorts of ways to find out about bearings. The options range from browsing the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia to delving into weightier readings as an engineering student. As an alternative, a brief introduction to the world of bearings was recently added to the NSK website for anyone with an interest in technology.
Why do people visit the websites of companies from the drive technology industry? A web analysis by NSK found that a surprisingly large number of visitors want to know what a bearing actually is. As the drive technology specialists thought it was unfair to expect non-experts to plough through the firm’s main bearing catalogue, they looked at the publication’s key subject matter, dissected it and wrote brief “Technical Insights” offering an introduction to the field.
Mathias Schlapp, Senior Project Engineer explained the aim as follows: “The result is a brief introduction to bearings, which is divided into four short sections. In the first section, two diagrams, four pictures and a few sentences explain in the space of minutes what a bearing is and what components it consists of.” Section by section, visitors to the website can now gain a deeper understanding of bearings – for example with information about the different types available (section 2). The “Technical Insights” (section 3) enable anyone who wants to find out more to download specialist articles from the main bearing catalogue. As the theory behind bearings can be a little dull at times, there are also examples of some of the incredible ways in which they are used in practice (section 4). For instance, visitors will be amazed to learn that bearings work reliably in liquid oxygen at freezing temperatures of –253 °C (in fuel pumps for interplanetary rockets) but that they can also handle extremely high temperatures of +300 to 500 °C (e.g. in computer tomographs) without failing.
