Ever since the 1970s, the shipping industry has prospered to meet the demands of our rapidly increasing population. Buying and selling globally has become a big part of global business trading strategies and liner Shipping is surely the most used method by businesses for transporting their goods and the most economical solution. The difference between liner shipping and bulk shipping is that liner shipping provides services in the transportation of final and semi-final products such as computers, manufacturing products, and other consumption goods as opposed to raw materials in the latter. With lower cost per kilogram and large capacity, liner shipping is the most efficient mode of transporting goods to Asia. In one year, a single large containership can carry over 200,000 container loads of cargo. While individual ships vary in size and carrying capacity, many container ships can transport up to 8,000 containers of goods and products on a single voyage. Similarly, on a single voyage, some car carrier ships can handle 7,600 cars. It would require hundreds of freight aircraft, many miles of rail cars, and fleets of trucks to carry the goods that can fit on one large liner ship.
According to the World Shipping Council, almost 85% of cargo volume of international products is transported by sea and 60% go through Asian ports. There are three types of service routes which are: end to end, pendulum route, and round-the-world service routes. End to end services schedule vessels back and forth between two continents. The round-the-world service route includes travel between three or more continents (typically between Asia-Europe-North America). Lastly, pendulum services schedule vessels back and forth between three continents with one of these continents as a fulcrum, with the points at either end of the pendulum swing linked only through the fulcrum. A major example of a pendulum service route is the Port of Singapore. Every two or three minutes, a ship arrives or departs from this port as it is the focal point for more than 200 shipping lines with links to more than 600 ports in over 120 countries. The merging of separate end-to-end services into a pendulum or round the world service serves the two main purposes of broadening the range of through services and reducing the number of ships required to provide the same coverage. Other major ports in Asia include Port of Pusan in South Korea (container tax completely removed), Ningbo-Zhoushan Port in China, Port of Tokyo (398 routes), and Ho Chi Minh City Port in Vietnam (fastest growth rate).
Recently, two independent sources looked at the economic contribution of the liner shipping industry and concluded that it is indeed a global economic engine for two reasons: the significant amount the industry contributes directly to the global economy, and the role of the industry as a facilitator of economic growth for other industries. Almost every country in Asia is connected by water including island countries like the Philippines, Japan and Taiwan. It takes less time to move a greater volume of goods between these countries and much more cost effective. In addition to the efficiency of a liner ship, it is also an environmentally sound transition. A ton of goods can be moved from the port of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to Tianjin, China, a distance of 3,327 kilometers (2,067 miles) will generate fewer CO2 emissions than would be generated if the same goods were trucked from Wuhan in Central China to Tianjin, a distance of just 988 kilometers (614 miles). Now, it is inevitable to go through China as they have the world’s largest port in Shanghai and also has the most number of ports.
In order to do business in Asia, utilizing the liner industry and taking advantage of the large number of ports will be the key to success.
