Optimized gear hobbing mills for more bite


Although modern vehicles are to provide more driving performance, they must also use less fuel and emit less CO2. To achieve these requirements, the design departments of the automotive groups are working on high revolutions, developing new vehicle shapes or optimizing the existing ones. The supply industry must also adapt to this and reorganize production lines without delay. It has long been recognized that the tools used in production without appropriate coatings rapidly run out of steam.

Thus, an automobile supplier producing gear wheels did not achieve the tool life. For example, in order to minimize the replacement time for the HSS shank hobs used, a specialized coating solution based on Hyperlox coating materials was designed in collaboration with the customer ? and has been proven to be successful.

Comparisons of the previously used TiAlN coating and the new solution revealed substantial improvements in tool life in terms of dry processing.

While around 4,700 parts were previously produced with a cutting speed of 240 m/min and a feed of 0.2 mm/rev, with the optimized coating it is now possible to produce around 6,100 parts.
In addition, as particular importance was placed on homogeneous coating distribution in terms of the gear tooth base, tip and face of the hobs, the sputtering technology used for the coating was the appropriate key to success and also improved the surface quality of the gear wheels produced. With the 30% increase in tool life, supply companies can be more relaxed with production and fulfill orders promptly.
