A Chinese manufacturer of high-precision steel balls and ball bearings is building a $7.2 million facility in the Lowcountry to serve customers in North and South America, the state’s Commerce Department said Tuesday.
The 240,000-square-foot JGBR plant will be located on 9 acres in Colleton County will create 65 jobs by the time production starts in early 2017. Once fully operational, JGBR plans to produce 400 tons of steel balls every month at the Walterboro site for customers in the automotive and mechanical industries.
“We looked at sites globally and selected Colleton County because we believe it is the perfect location to serve our existing customers in South Carolina and to grow our North American business,” Billy Strickland, JGBR’s vice president of operations in Walterboro, said in a statement.
The state’s Coordinating Council for Economic Development has approved a $250,000 grant to help JGBR with property improvements and the company will be eligible for job development tax credits.
Steven Murdaugh, chairman of Colleton County Council, said the announcement “is a great indicator that Colleton County can compete globally and be successful.”
Bobby Hitt, the state’s Commerce Secretary, called the company’s decision “yet another big win” for rural South Carolina.
The Walterboro investment is the state’s first for Rugao, China-based JGBR, which stands for Jiangsu General Ball & Roller Co.
