Japan's NSK Looks to China for Savings in Forging Bearing Parts
To help cut costs, NSK Ltd. plans to start forging bearing parts in China.
The work will be done at a processing company NSK has established with a group member in the forging business. This Chinese firm is expected to have nearly 100 workers and will put its plant into service this autumn.
The new company will be responsible for forging processes that increase strength by applying pressure to inner and outer rings formed on bearing steel. The forged components will be incorporated into autoparts at a local firm that aims to triple autoparts sales to nearly 60 billion yen (US$561 million) by fiscal year 2011.
Until now, NSK has been exporting parts forged in Japan. But moving to a structure that handles everything from processing through assembly locally will help lower costs and enable it to realize prices that match Chinese automakers' procurement strategies. Doing more work locally is also expected to accelerate cultivation of the local market.
This will be NSK's first time forging in Asia. Except for some work done in Europe, it has previously concentrated forging in Japan to prevent an outflow of expertise.
