Japan Nachi-Fujikoshi Corp. (TSE:6474) is increasing Chinese production of roller bearings used in automobile joints in response to growing demand as the car market there expands.
This year, the company will invest 1 billion yen (US$10.7 milliion) to add more production lines at its plant in the city of Dongguan. This will raise monthly output capacity to 800,000 units, 2.3 times current capacity. The bearings are supplied to U.K. drive system parts producer GKN Plc, which is raising Chinese production of the constant velocity joints by 50 per cent this year.
The expansion will increase the company's Chinese production ratio to nearly 20 per cent. Plans call for output to be hiked to 1 million units per month by 2012 to meet growing demand from Japanese autoparts manufacturers.
In addition to China, Nachi-Fujikoshi has overseas roller bearing production sites in the U.S. and the Czech Republic. Domestically, sales to Toyota Motor Corp. (TSE:7203) and Honda Motor Co. (TSE:7267) are strong, so this year it is targeting a 30 per cent increase in global roller bearing production volume. It is also planning to boost Chinese production of ball bearings for motorcycles and hydraulic equipment.
