Gear Drives Keep Rolling Machines Working
When Swiss based manufacture Leistritz Thommen was looking for robust gear drives for its rolling machines, it turned to Renold for a solution. Leistritz Thommen , based in the Swiss town of Tenniken, has been producing profile rolling machines for over 10 years. Different from turning machines, which use a cutting tool to produce the form, profile rolling machines use dies to produce the form through the pressure applied by the revolving mandrills.
The largest machine, the RT630, has two revolving mandrels, each of which needs to be driven to a precise speed and at high torque.Leistritz Thommen approached Renold (Switzerland) GMBH in Dubendorf to find a driving solution.A pair of PW70 single-reduction worm gear units from the PM series range were supplied .
Each unit is fitted with special ratio gearing , manufactured with close tolerance reduced backlash gearing and modified to accept a flange-mounted servo drive motor driven through a backlash-free coupling.
Following successful installations, development is well underway to supply the gear drives for the larger RT630 CCA.
