Freudenberg-NOK's Johnson Discusses Advanced Off-highway Emission Strategies

To satisfy the future emission reduction demands of the off-highway industry, wider application of existing technologies and the development of innovative, new, cost-effective technologies is required. Advanced emissions solutions, like those found in Freudenberg-NOK Sealing Technologies' Low Emission Sealing Solutions (LESS) portfolio, help reduce weight and friction while improving the overall efficiency of today's industrial powertrains. They must play a larger role in efforts to manufacture more sustainable vehicles and equipment.

Freudenberg-NOK's Joel Johnson, global vice president of the company's Mobile Machinery Sector, discussed these topics and more during today's SAE "Advanced Emissions Strategies" technical webinar. Johnson joined two off-highway technical experts: David McShane, executive vice president, business development and strategy, and general manager of Chicago Technical Center, Ricardo; and Duncan Riding, senior technical steward, business development engineering, Perkins.

Together, the group discussed the advanced emissions solutions currently available to the off-highway industry, as well as future technical product solutions, requirements and development strategies. Topics ranged from the latest in advanced combustion and emissions control, to alternative power solutions, to advances in materials, simulation tools and sealing technologies.

A recording of the webinar can be accessed for up to 12 months via this link: https://event.webcasts.com/starthere.jsp?ei=1117503 or on the SAE

According to Johnson, it's difficult to separate fuel efficiency from engine emissions and, as such, off-highway suppliers' advanced emissions strategies must meet both of these criteria, while also addressing the market trends of downsizing and exhaust gas after treatment. For Freudenberg-NOK, this means optimizing the following areas: engine (for size reductions); direct injection; exhaust gas recirculation; friction reduction; improved transmission technologies; and selective catalytic reduction.

Freudenberg-NOK's efforts have coalesced in development of its LESS product portfolio of comprehensive solutions that influence energy consumption and emissions. For its off-highway customers, Johnson focused on the following LESS technologies:

Valve Stem Modification for Diesel Emissions: a "double-lip" lip seal that offers the advantages of oil metering and blow-by control;
Levitex®: a next-generation seal technology that reduces friction by up to 90 percent;
Improved Transmission Efficiencies: by leveraging its material development and process expertise, as well as optimizing designs and molding to help use oil flow and oil pressure to minimize power loss;
Improved Hot Joint Gaskets: multi- and single-layer steel gaskets compatible with exhaust gas and urea additives; and
AdBlue® Resistant Materials for High Temperatures: ongoing development of materials that can handle AdBlue, an aqueous urea solution, while reaching a continuous upper temperature limit of = 200°C and a volume swell of =15 percent after 168H at 140°C.

According to Johnson, using and refining the technology of today, there is an opportunity to reduce emissions significantly – even as much as the reductions generated in the past 10 years. Through its LESS portfolio, Freudenberg-NOK is doing its part to make that statement a reality.
