Penn Township firefighters were called to a late-morning fire Tuesday at SKF USA Inc. that reportedly sent flames shooting across the ceiling and filled a part of the plant with smoke.
"For a building that size, it filled up with smoke quickly," said Stan McCraw, an employee of Riley Welding & Fabricating Inc., who was working inside the 20 Industrial Drive plant when the fire broke out. Plant officials alerted employees over the public-address system to evacuate, he said.
McCraw said he saw flames on the inside, but at about 11:30 a.m. as he watched from his truck outside, there were no flames nor smoke visible.
Meanwhile, firefighters examined the roof decking to make sure the fire was out, according to a supervising firefighter on the scene. The firefighter, who didn't give his name, said there were no injuries and referred all questions to Penn Township Fire Chief Jan Cromer, who would not comment. Hanover Fire Department assisted at the scene.
SKF is a worldwide maker of ball and roller bearings. Company officials could not be reached to comment.
