Fire destroys vital machine at NH Ball Bearings

LACONIA, N.H. —Fire destroyed an important machine at the New Hampshire Ball Bearings plant in Laconia early Sunday.

Investigators say it appears a mechanical issue of some kind sparked the fire inside a Teflon machine. An employee used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames. By the time firefighters arrived at 155 Lexington Drive about 5:45 a.m. the machine was just smoldering. The employee was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Firefighters say they were told that the machine is vital to the operations at the facility, which makes customized bearing solutions for things like airframe control actuators, accessory engine links, engine mounts, helicopter rotor assemblies, and landing gear.
