Emergency Landing Blamed On Wheel Bearing Faluty

The sparks that caused a Midwest Airlines jet to make at emergency landing at Logan International Airport Tuesday night were caused by a wheel bearing failure, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Jim Peters, an FAA spokesman, said that an inspection of the plane yesterday showed it was in no danger during the emergency landing. Peters said the bearing problem developed on the outboard wheel of the right main landing gear. The plane landed safely, with streaks of sparks showing, just before 10 p.m., with all 86 passengers and four crew members unhurt. The flight was bound for Milwaukee and spent several hours circling the Boston area to burn off fuel before landing
