Energy consultancy giant DNV GL will head up a new joint industry project (JIP) aiming to boost the reliability of wind turbines by devising a new equation to work out the predicted life-time of gearbox slewing bearings.
The JIP, spawned by the belief that the industry "lacked a strong life-time calculation concept" for the bearings, will engage stakeholders from across the industry "to cooperatively decrease" gearbox failures at wind farm developments.
"By developing a reliable calculation concept for slewing bearings, energy stakeholders will be able to work towards realistic operational lifetime estimations, offering the possibility of an efficient design process and a reduction of the manufacturing costs," says DNV GL executive vice president Andreas Schröter.
The two-year JIP, set to kick-off in early 2015, is expected to lead to a DNV GL recommended practice or standard.
