Dana Reveals Innovative Combine, Forage Harvester Drivetrain Concepts
Dana Holding Corporation (NYSE: DAN) has debuted a wide range of drivetrain concepts for combines and forage harvesters, including new suspended steer axle and shift-on-fly transmission designs, at Agritechnica 2013, the world’s largest trade fair for agricultural machinery and equipment.
Dana was the first supplier in the market to offer suspended steer axles for combines and forage harvesters. Available now, this design delivers increased traction, more stable weight distribution, isolation from body vibration for improved operator comfort, and improved handling characteristics while allowing for on-road travel speeds up to 40 km/h (24 mph).
Dana has also supplied rigid steer axles for forage harvesters over the past seven years, and Dana has enhanced this portfolio by taking advantage of technologies developed for a new line of modular, three-piece axles for agricultural tractors. These improvements allow engineers to reduce the time from design to production to delivery while supporting a wide range of customization options.
The new three-speed, shift-on-fly hydrostatic transmission concept for combines and forage harvesters up to 36 tonnes (40 tons) will provide a cost-effective system for seamlessly changing speeds in varying field conditions or when transitioning between field operation and on-road travel. Compact and versatile, this design uses advanced gear shifting technology to eliminate the need for stopping the vehicle when shifting gears, supplying virtually the same performance as a powershift transmission at a reduced cost. It also offers higher system efficiency and lower noise when operating at maximum speed.
The shift-on-fly transmission concept includes inboard wet disc brakes that offer proven fail-safe stopping performance and energy absorption, while an integrated spring-applied, hydraulically released (SAHR) parking brake is available as an option.
Dana has supplied shift-on-fly transmissions for nearly a decade on compact, hydrostatic-driven vehicles including wheeled excavators, telescopic boom handlers, and front-end loaders.
“Operators today are spending longer hours working in the field or moving from site to site, and the keys to maximizing their productivity are advancements that help them handle the full range of conditions they face in the field and on the road,” said Aziz Aghili, president of Dana Off-Highway Driveline Technologies. “These new drivetrain solutions for the agricultural industry show how we can leverage our commitment to innovations to deliver real value to equipment buyers.”
