A RMB 304-million wind turbine blade plant in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province on Tuesday went into operation and will soon deliver a first batch of blades to a wind power plant in Guazhou County, Gansu Province.
The wind energy plant is being built in three phases. When complete, it will have an annual output value of more than RMB 1 billion, an output value larger than any other wind turbine blade production base in China.
China has set a target of installing 150 GW of wind power by 2020, which requires 11.5 GW of new wind capacity each year from 2009 onwards, according to the Global Wind Energy Council.
The first phase of construction, now complete, began in April 2009. The plant can now produce 300 blades worth RMB 300 million in total per year. The second phase of construction will begin in June. At the end of this year, preliminary work for the third phase will begin.
According to statistics released by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the country generated a total of 16.13 megawatts of electricity from wind power plants in 2009, 92.26% more than in 2008.
Reportedly, China's National Development and Reform Commission recently abolished the ordinances that required at least 70% of the country's wind power equipment be made in China.
GE has received an order from Chinese wind energy developer HECIC New Energy for 88 1.5 MW wind turbines to be deployed in three projects in Hebei and Shanxi Provinces.
