The China Association of Special Steel Enterprises issued official estimates of steel usage across various manufacturing industries.
In 2005, China's officially recognized bearing and rolling element manufacturers, it estimates, will consume a new record of more than 1.6 million tons of 52100 rod. It did not offer an estimate of demand for 52100 tube.
The estimate also does not factor in demand from the majority of second-tier and third-tier bearing manufacturers -- who tend to obtain steel through unofficial channels and a vast array of unmonitored sources.
The Peoples Republic of China is not yet able to produce enough high-quality specialty steel to meet its own internal demand; domestic production has been focused on high-volume structural steel and sheet/coils. According to the CASSE, the vast majority of 52100 steel used in China will continue to be imported from Europe and Asia.
Increasing the country's production of high-quality, specialty alloy, stainless, and other specialty steel is a key focus of government steel infrastructure development efforts. With demand for more easily manufactured varieties of steel continuing to outstrip supply, however, the CASSE said China's steelmakers will not try to increase production of high-end steels such as 52100 until at least 2006 or later.
