China Aiming to Take Grid-installed Capacity to 75GW

China connected 12.85GW to the grid in 2012, according to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (Serc).

Reaching 75GW would make wind the third largest power source in China, following 860GW thermal power and 280GW hydro power. It would also be above both nuclear power and solar, which are targeting 14.78GW and 6GW respectively for 2013.

According to CEC, China installed 12.85GW of new turbines last year to take its installed wind power to 60.83GW by the end of 2012.

In the past two years, the Chinese government has adjusted the strategy for wind power development. It has controlled the scales and speeds of wind farm construction in northern regions, which have rich wind power resources but fewer electric power users.

The government has encouraged wind power developers to tap wind resources in the central and southern regions, which have high altitude or low wind speed areas.
