Boca Bearings sponsored RC biker Macky Franklin shares recent race results: This past week Syd and I headed to Downieville, CA for the All-Mountain World Championships. The Downieville Classic format is unique in that All-Mountain competitors must race both Saturday's cross-country and Sunday's downhill on the same bike. There is a mandatory weigh-in at the start of both days and your bike must weigh the same so you can't even change tires. You are then awarded points based on your finishes each day and the overall is calculated by summing the points from the two races. Syd and I spent the early part of the week relaxing and pre-riding the race courses. My arm continued to heal from the crash at National Championships and by the time the weekend rolled around I was ready to race! I finished 4th in the Cross Country on Saturday with a time of just over two hours. The 27-mile course climbed over 3,000 ft and descended over 5,000. My time was similar to last year but I rode the Pivot Mach 5.7 Carbon which has almost an inch more travel than the bike I raced last year and was about four pounds heavier so I felt good about the result. The racer who finished in 3rd had also chosen not to race the All-Mountain category so in the All-Mountain classification I was 3rd. The next day I finished 9th in the downhill which put me into 6th place overall in the All-Mountain. I tied with 5th place in terms of All-Mountain points but the tie-breaker is the downhill finish time and he beat me so he got the 5th place spot. I felt good on the descent (the extra suspension made the ride much more fun) and had a faster run than last year. I wish I had spent a bit more time pre-riding the downhill course though and am determined to do so next year. Overall a great weekend filled with racing, hanging out and ice baths in the Downie River.
