Barden: Up to 35 Plymouth jobs to go

MANUFACTURING company the Barden Corporation (UK) Ltd has started a consultation period that will result in the loss of up to 35 jobs in Plymouth.

The business, one of Plymouth's largest private sector employers, announced yesterday that it would further 'rationalise' its workforce in light of the difficult financial climate, and had started a 30-day consultation on Wednesday.

In February, the Estover-based company said it would shed 10 per cent of its work force, making between 40 and 50 people redundant.

The company yesterday issued the following statement: "With the difficult global economic climate continuing to impact on demand in the industrial bearings market, The Barden Corporation (UK) Ltd is again reviewing its activities and will be proposing a further rationalisation of its workforce in light of a continued drop in orders.

"Despite efforts to reduce costs during the first half of the year, the Plymouth site has determined a reduction in headcount may be necessary to lessen the impact of the worldwide recession.

"It is anticipated this would equate to a loss of up to 35 positions across all areas of the business.
"We must regrettably announce we are commencing a 30 day consultation period with our workforce, with immediate effect (June 10th). It is our aim to minimise job losses wherever possible."

Barden is said to be a world leader in the design and manufacture of ball bearings and has designed bespoke engineering solutions for more than 60 years.

It offers a range of super-precision bearings for a variety of applications, including aerospace, turbomolecular pumps, medical instruments, machine tool and motorsport.
