In conjunction with the STLE Annual Conference, ABMA hosted a Bearings and Their Lubrication course. The course took place on Sunday, May 6 in St. Louis, Missouri. The course focused on rolling element bearings for those involved in industrial equipment design, reliability, and maintenance. It included a basic overview of bearings, their selection, and lubrication related influences. A hands-on failure analysis session was also incorporated into the course.
Ian Hegner, NTN Bearing Corporation of America, started the day off by outlining bearing types. He discussed typical bearings used in industrial applications, basic designs, components, characteristics, tolerances, benefits and example applications.
Dan Snyder, SKF USA, Inc., then spoke about basic lubrication and rating life of bearings. His presentation included EHL formation and lubrication requirements for rolling bearings, oil vs. grease, re-lubrication requirements, load ratings & life calculations based on ISO 281: 2007, and environmental influences.
Bimal Nathwani, NSK Corporation, reviewed bearing tolerances, clearances and fits.
Scott Hyde, The Timken Company, followed up with a presentation on bearing materials and coatings. This included information about bearing steels and properties, alternate materials, specialty coatings, cage materials, and seal materials
Roman Wajda, Baldor Dodge, outlined bearings in lubrication in fan/blower applications and also spoke about bearing failures. This included pictures followed by hands on analysis of actual failed bearings.
Piet Lugt, SKF USA Inc., wrapped up the day by reviewing lubrication influence on bearing operating characteristics.
Based on initial feedback, the attendees found the course very informative and very worthwhile.
Thank you again to all of the instructors!
