ABB wins orders worth $65 million to strengthen Iraq power infrastructure

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won orders worth around $65 million from Mass Global Investment (MGI) Co., to provide a turnkey electrical and automation solution for a new gas-turbine power plant and build a substation extension. These installations will help boost power supplies and strengthen the transmission infrastructure in northern Iraq. The order was booked in the third quarter.
Comprising four gas turbines with a capacity of 125 megawatt (MW) each, the new Dohuk 2 power plant will be an extension of the existing ABB-built 500 MW Dohuk 1 power station, which went into operation in 2011.

ABB will design, supply and install the electrical balance of plant (EBoP) solution and provide the grid connection for the 500 MW open cycle gas turbine (OCGT) power plant. Key product supplies include low- and medium-voltage switchgear, the auxiliary systems for fuel supply and the control and automation system. The new plant will be fueled by natural gas and light fuel oil. It is scheduled to be operational in just 10 months and is the latest in a series of OCGT projects implemented by ABB for MGI. ABB will also extend a 132 kilovolt (kV) substation delivered earlier, to connect the Dohuk 2 power plant to the grid.

In another project, ABB will supply a state-of-the-art control system and a 400 kV substation for the grid connection of the 1,000 MW Erbil OCGT plant, which will be converted to a CCGT (combined cycle gas turbine) plant by extending it with heat recovery steam generators and two steam turbines, boosting output by 470 MW.
